Aomori is a city located on the northern tip of Honshu Island and is among the best places in Japan for viewing cherry blossoms in late April through early May. In Aomori Prefecture, the Hirosaki Sakura-Matsuri Cherry Blossom Festival attracts visitors who enjoy the colorful blooms of nearly 3.000 trees with 52 various species of cherry blossoms from boats, under tunnels of trees. The park lights up during the Cherry Blossom Festival which gives a dreamy feeling to the Hirosaki Castle tower under the illuminating cherry blossoms at night. Here you can also find the oldest Someiyoshino tree that is existing in Japan.
But Aomori is not the only place where you can see those thousands of trees in blossoms in the same time. You can experience such excitement in Tokyo as well. but there is arguably no destination more beautiful in the spring than Kyoto. The cherry blossom season is carefully forecasted each year, and predictions for 2019 suggest that you may see the city’s spectacular cherry flowers starting from March 23, with the peak viewing taking place from early to mid April.
Look at this.. isn’t it awesome?
April is also a peak season for tulips in Amsterdam, with large patchworks of vibrant flowers blooming all around. Make the 30-minute drive from Amsterdam to Keukenhof Gardens, one of the world’s largest flower gardens, for rainbow-hued displays. Every year tulip festival takes place here, but has different dates. This year, in 2019, it will be open starting from March 21 and will last until May 19. Find more information about the tulip fest and the admission fees to the garden here.
Venice.. who ever dreamed about visit this wonderful romantic city in Italy? April is one of the best times to come to the city of canals and history. The weather is pleasant and less humid than in summer. If you missed the annual Carnival in Venice, it’s not a problem. You will have another chance to see the city in celebration. Every year on April 25, Venice celebrates St. Mark’s feast day with the Festa di San Marco featuring a gondolier regatta and other festivities in St. Mark’s Square. This Square is named for the patron saint of Venice who is symbolized by a winged lion holding a bible. Start exploring the city from here, enjoy the views from the Rialto bridge and enjoy the mesmerizing sunset. You can even make a day trip to the most colorful islands Murano and Burano and experience a firework of colors!
If you still couldn’t get enough of winter activities, then you can go for skiing in the Austrian ski resort of Mayrhofen, which is located near the Hintertux glacier. Here you can ski even in summer! However, in April the slopes aren’t the main attraction. Every year Mayrhofen also hosts Snowbombing, one of the world’s most popular electronic music festivals. In 2019 this crazy fest will begin on April 8 and will end on 13th. Drink, dance, have fun and enjoy the breathtaking views of Alps! Find out more about this exciting event here.
Here is another spot where you can ski in Swiss Alps in April. Zermatt is one of the best ski resorts in – it’s high enough that there’s still plenty of snow as it’s got the highest ski lifts in Europe and open all year round, plus there is a snow-making machine to top up the levels on the glacier. If you are far from extreme, you can come here just to take a cable car to the top and enjoy the majestic views from the top. You can also spend a lazy day in the town drinking hot gluhwein in the enlightened streets.
Cyprus is another great destination in April. The weather starts warming up enough for sunbathing without burning to a crisp. But if you’re planning to swim in the cristal clear waters of Mediterranean sea, I will have to disappoint you, as the sea may still be a little cold for swimming, while the pleasantly warm temperatures are perfect for activities like hiking or exploring the island by foot. And actually it’s not that big, from one side to another you can reach in just 2-3 hours drive. Intercity bus system is well organised here, so you shouldn’t have any problems with that. I’ve already shared some stories about different places from Cyprus, but I believe there is much more do discover in this amazingly beautiful pearl island.
In terms of weather, April isn’t always the best time to visit Thailand, since it can be uncomfortably hot. However, during celebration of Songkran, the beginning of the Thai New Year, the entire country enjoys the world’s biggest water fight. It is a traditional Buddhist festival, and it is usually celebrated between 13 and 16 April. During a five-day public holiday in mid-April the country turns into one giant, good-natured water fight, with locals and tourists alike soaking each other in the streets. Even elephants are “participating” this refreshing festival. I don’t know about the rest of the world, but Armenia also has a water-fighting festival, which is celebrated in the middle of summer and a date is changed every year depending on the Easter date. This is really fun and refreshing 💦😄
Havana is definitely one of the most beautiful places in the world. In April the weather is pretty much perfect to explore the island and swim in white sandy beaches. But Cuba offers also a vibrant festival which takes place in Havana every year and lasts for a week. In 2019 from April 22 to 28, the city hosts Ritmo Cuba, a week of parties, dance shows and dance workshops. Enjoy 7 days of non-stop salsa, parties and fun! More information about Cuban Carnival here.
Springfest (or as locals call it Frühlingsfest), is Munich’s spring time beer festival that offers all the perks of Oktoberfesti and takes place at Theresienwiese. It’s s often known as a “mini Oktoberfest” as it has less crowds and the city is less busy, and that’s why springfest seems to be a less touristy alternative to Oktoberfest. The main difference is that there are only two large beer tents instead of the fourteen during Oktoberfest. If you’re planning to attend Munich Spring Festival this year, you should take in mind that Frühlingsfest 2019 will be happening from April 26, 2019 – May 12, 2019.
This was just a small part of list of countries where you can find something interesting for you, depending on your preferences. Could it be a delightful gardens or extreme activities, dances or drinks, fun or relaxing, you can always find a reasonable place to enjoy your holiday. I hope you could find something useful from the list above. Or maybe you can add any place/activity to this list?
P. S. I don’t own the right to any of listed pictures except the one from Cyprus 😉
